Professional Development for Staff

  • Staff person must have been employed by The Media School full time for at least six months prior to applying, although exceptions can be made for compelling reasons.
  • The professional development activity may supplement or expand upon, but may not duplicate, any opportunity currently available at IU Bloomington. For basic skill building, be sure to check out the LinkedIn Learning catalog, UITS’s trainings, and trainings offered by various IU departments.
  • The professional development activity must be directly related to the applicant’s current or future duties and responsibilities with The Media School.
  • Staff are expected to pursue other funds, such as an IUB Staff Council Professional Development Grant or partial funding from a MSCH center or program, whenever possible to match or supplement MSCH funding.
  • Funds should be used within one year.
  • While we expect funding requests to vary by proposal, funds for this program are limited and competitive.
  • Those receiving funding are expected to bring back information and experience to share with their co-workers. A brief report at an MSCH staff meeting will be requested. In addition, depending on the activity and staff role, it may make sense to give a longer presentation at a team or MSCH staff meeting, hold a workshop, host a brown bag discussion, or be interviewed for a MSCH news article.
  • Requests will be reviewed by Ron, Rebecca, and Katie and funding recommendations and funding recommendations will be shared with Radhika prior to approval.

Funding decisions will be based on...

  • The size and scope of all requests received.
  • A thoughtful and understandable description of the professional development activity.
  • A clear and convincing explanation of the value and rewards the activity will provide to the staff member, their team, and The Media School.
  • The activity’s alignment with the goals, directions, strategies, and mission of The Media School.
  • Availability of additional funding source(s) or demonstrated effort to secure additional funding.
  • Willing support and justification from the supervisor.
  • Past funding. Priority will be given to those not having received funding in recent funding cycles.

Application deadlines: April 1, July 1, October 1
