The IU Police Department’s non-emergency phone number is 812-855-4111. Always call 911 in the event of an emergency.
In an active shooter situation, IU recommends you choose any of three options: run, hide, fight. Visit Protect IU’s website for IU’s full Run, Hide, Fight procedures.
In the event of a building evacuation, students, staff and faculty should close all doors fully prior to evacuating the building, find the nearest exit and safely move to the designated area. Remain in that location until you are given the all-clear signal or further instructions.
The designated areas for evacuation from Franklin Hall are:
Fire requires evacuation of the building or the use of a fire extinguisher.
If you are trained and comfortable with using it, follow these instructions, called P.A.S.S., to operate the fire extinguisher:
Pull: Pull the pin. This will also break the tamper seal.
Aim: Aim the nozzle low, pointing its horn or hose at the base of the fire. Do not touch the plastic discharge horn on CO2 extinguishers as they may cause damage to your skin.
Squeeze: Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
Sweep: Sweep the hose from side to side at the base of the fire until the flame appears to be out. Watch the area. If the fire re-ignites, repeat the process.
If you have the slightest doubt about your ability to fight a fire, evacuate the building.
First aid may be necessary during any emergency. If so, provide immediate aid within the limits of your training and capabilities.
If necessary, contact Emergency Medical Services at 911 as soon as possible. Always send someone to meet EMS and escort to the injured party.
If an emergency requires an Automated External Defibrillator and you are properly trained, locate the nearest AED, and follow the instructions inside the kit.
Franklin Hall AEDs are located in the following areas:
Radio-Television Building AEDs are located in the following areas:
During severe weather, please take shelter in the specified severe weather shelter locations for Franklin Hall and the Radio-Television Building. These locations are marked on emergency maps located around each building.
If unsure, take shelter in the lowest levels of the building away from doors and windows. IU Notify will provide alerts when people should seek shelter and will provide an “all clear” notification when it’s safe to leave the shelter locations.
