S/F option introduced for spring semester

Wednesday, March 25, 2020

Because of this semester's unexpected transition to a different teaching format, instructors now have the option to assign a grade of S for "satisfactory" or F for "fail" to students rather than a letter grade in some circumstances.

In general, faculty should continue to use regular letter grades.

There are two exceptions for instructors who wish to use the new S option.

This option can be used if an individual student has done enough to complete a course but a more nuanced evaluation cannot be made. No special permission is required to use this option.

Individual students may also request the S/F grading scale at any time throughout the semester. The request will automatically be granted by the registrar.

The S grade has been added as an option to the letter grade scale for this semester.

This option requires the approval of the associate dean.

If you have a compelling reason to convert to the S/F grading scale, email Walter Gantz by March 25. Include your name, academic unit, course number, course title and a description of why an exception should be made for your course.

If you have been grading on an S/F scale from the beginning of the semester, you may continue to do so without requesting special permission.

Other considerations

  • If your course is approved to be graded on the S/F scale, individual students may still request a letter grade. Students may request letter grades for many reasons, including financial aid or scholarships, GPA, graduate school admission or job qualifications.
  • The S grade threshold is the equivalent of a D- or higher for undergraduates and C or higher for graduate students.
  • An S grade will count toward all requirements for the spring 2020 semester. S grades will not affect students' GPAs.
